Drugs legal (including tobacco and alcohol) and illicit drugs are estimated to cost the economy $56.1 billion ($31.5 billion due to tobacco, $15.3 billion to alcohol and $8.2 billion to illicit drugs) - Refer to the Australian Government’s National Drug Strategy Household Survey detailed reports (2013/2016).Alcohol, sometimes regarded as a stimulant, is actually a depressant, and, with the other drugs are co-contributors to many home, industrial and car accidents. Alcohol and Drugs affect concentration, judgements, perception, mood and mental health. They can also cause financial hardship for family members/ addiction…/ social problems / increased mental illness / crime use / hospitalisations / increase in HIV-AIDS / Hep C / low birth weight/defects / overdoses/ poisoning / suicides…
When taken in excessive quantities and/or with certain medication they can lead to drowsiness / loss of consciousness / failures of many body organs - including brain injury, liver disease, cancers, stroke, heart disease etc. / inappropriate behaviour / loss of driving licence / risk taking behaviour / injury and death…
Drug and alcohol support services are widely available to provide help and support. Some support services are co-located at local Community Health Centres and some counselling services are generally provided for free/based on income levels. (You can phone on behalf of someone else!).
